Tata Motors reported a 56 percent increase in sales for August 2026, moving 67,753 units across domestic and international markets.

Strong Domestic Performance

The company sold 65,253 vehicles within India last month. This figure represents a 59 percent rise compared to August 2025, when it moved 41,001 units. The domestic market remains the primary driver for the automaker, accounting for 96 percent of the total volume. International business sales were lower, coming in at 2,500 units. This segment grew by 8 percent year-on-year, increasing from 2,314 units sold during the same period last year.

Electric Vehicle Surge

Zero-emission vehicles drove the bulk of the growth. Tata sold 16,549 EVs in August 2026, nearly double the 8,540 units recorded during the same month in 2025. This surge represents a 94 percent increase in electric vehicle volumes. The Nexon EV and Punch EV have been major contributors to this success. The Tiago EV and the premium Harrier EV also added to the numbers. The electrified Sierra recently joined the lineup, with the Safari EV expected to launch soon.

Tata’s electric sales outpaced Mahindra by nearly 6,000 units last month. The company finished second in the overall standings behind Maruti Suzuki, recording the highest year-on-year growth among the top six manufacturers. The rapid expansion of the EV portfolio has transformed the company’s product lineup and market position. This shift is reshaping the competitive setting in India’s passenger vehicle sector, where traditional internal combustion engine sales have slowed.

Sales Breakdown

  • Domestic PV Sales: 65,253 units (+59% YoY)
  • International Business: 2,500 units (+8% YoY)
  • Total PV Sales (including EV): 67,753 units (+56% YoY)
  • EV Sales (Domestic + International): 16,549 units (+94% YoY)

The domestic passenger vehicle business accounted for 65,253 units out of Tata Motors’ total August sales of 67,753 units. Its volumes in the foreign markets contributed the remaining 2,500 units. The combined figure shows a substantial increase over the 43,315 units sold across the two markets in the same period twelve months ago. This indicates that the automaker has successfully leveraged its existing portfolio to expand its footprint while maintaining a strong foothold in the core Indian territory.

The EV numbers also show an appreciable increase in Tata Motors’ volumes compared to its overall passenger vehicle business as the Nexon EV and Punch EV have been major contributors along with Tiago EV and the more premium Harrier EV. The electrified Sierra joined the party recently while the Safari is expected to be introduced in the near future. The electric vehicle segment posted the highest year-on-year increase among the reported categories as well. Tata outsold Mahindra by nearly 6,000 units last month to finish second in the overall standings behind Maruti Suzuki with the highest year-on-year growth recorded amongst the top six.
